The Legacy Behind the Name

The name Kaila Chamunda carries one of India’s oldest living traditions of Devi worship. It is rooted in the ancient shrine of Kaila Devi at Karauli, Rajasthan, revered as one of the nine sacred Shakti Peethas, where the Goddess is believed to reside in her most potent form.

  • A form of Mahalakshmi

Maa is believed to be a form of Mahalakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. Devotees especially seek her blessings for prosperity.

  • One of the nine Shakti Peethas

The Karauli temple is regarded as one of the nine Shakti Peethas, the special holy places of Goddess Durga, and is among the most significant Devi shrines of North India.

  • Protector and wish-fulfiller

Devotees believe that prayers offered here bring protection from evil, good fortune and the fulfilment of wishes.

  • Linked to the story of Krishna’s birth

She is identified with Mahayogini Maya, who took birth as the child of Nanda and Yashoda and changed places with the infant Krishna to protect him from Kansa. That is why she is seen as a saviour and protector.

  • Chamunda Mata beside her

The murti of Chamunda Mata, believed to be the sister of Kaila Devi, is enshrined alongside her. Chamunda Mata stands for power and protection, and prayers to her are believed to guard devotees from negative forces.
